The 100-day sprint began last Tuesday. In my email last week I suggested that this is a great time of year, right after summer vacation, to send The Magic Email. 

On Thursday I received this note…

“Hey Blair! I just sent my first two Magic Emails to two of my ‘ghost-iest’ potential clients…and they both responded positively within about 85 seconds. That email is cray cray. Thank you!”

On Friday, he returned with this update…

“Final update on my Magic Emails: 8 for 8, 100% response rate. They are now all in the warm to hot lead category. Thanks again!”

The Magic Email

The origins of this email are unknown to me. It was taught to me ~25 years ago as a voicemail script. Use it to raise deals from the dead after you’ve submitted a proposal and the prospect has quit responding to your follow-up inquiries. 

Reply in a current email thread or with a new subject line.

Subject: Closing the Loop

Hi [firstname], I haven’t heard back from you on [project] so I’m going to assume you’ve gone in a different direction or your priorities have changed. Feel free to reach out if I can be of assistance in the future.

You could alter this email in some small ways, but I wouldn’t. There is power and elegance in its simplicity. 

This formula works to remove the emotional weight from the decision you’re asking the client to make. That weight was placed there by you. You overinvested in the sale. You wanted it too much. You were too eager. 

So the answer is No and the client can’t bring themselves to tell you, or, more commonly, they are undecided and your follow-ups are pushing them further and further away.

This email says, “I get it. You’ve hired our competitor or you’re no longer doing this. That’s fine. It’s just business. I’ll move on. I’m here if you need me but when the time comes, you’ll need to reach out to me. I’m done chasing you.”
